Youth Development Opportunities Through VFW

Established in 1947, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), sponsors several youth programs including a national patriotic writing and speech competition for grades 6-12 to encourage students to express their perspectives on America, democracy, patriotism, and veterans’ experiences, with local, state, and national levels of competition and scholarship awards.

VeteranCare MedLink is pleased to highlight the youth development opportunities available through VFW Post 6024. These programs give students an opportunity to reflect on the experiences and contributions of our veterans while developing their writing and communication skills.

Voice of Democracy

This competition is open to students in grades 9–12. Participants are asked to prepare a three- to five-minute audio essay responding to the annual theme. In addition to recognizing students at the local level, the program offers opportunities to compete for scholarships and other awards.

Patriot’s Pen

The Patriot’s Pen competition is open to students in grades 6–8. Students submit a 300–400 word essay addressing the annual theme. The program encourages young people to explore their understanding of America and the experiences of those who have served the country.

For the 2026–2027 school year, both programs are centered on the theme “What A Veteran Taught Me About America.”

Students interested in participating through VFW Post 6024 should submit their entries by October 23, 2026. The Youth Development page includes program guidelines, application materials, and submission information.
